課程概述

This course is an introduction to phonetics. We will explore this broad topic by employing phonetic transcription to look at spoken English of various varieties and possibly also other languages around the world. Readings and homework assignments provide an extensive survey of speech sounds in English, and a course project in phonetic description provides hands-on application of the topics discussed in class. The pronunciation practicum offers a recitation period for students to apply what they have learned from lectures to actual pronunciations. Practical training in phonetics is particularly valuable for professions in language education – whether ESL, or other foreign language education. Phonetic training also benefits students who are interested in human/computer interface technology, and students in training for certification as speech pathologists or audiologists. Of course, students who wish to study linguistics should take phonetics.

說明
1.
Participation
5%
Except for the first class, readings should be completed in advance. Some of the materials will NOT be covered in class. However, homework, quizzes, and exams will assume that you have read these. You should bring the textbook to class every time as a handy reference. Since lecture and discussion do not rehash the contents of the text, attendance is extremely important. If you miss a class, you are expected to get class notes from someone who was in attendance. In the event that you must miss a class, I will assist in making up missed work ONLY with a written excuse for the absence, provided that the notification is no later than the day of class. However, under NO circumstances should you expect me to regurgitate the lecture from the class you missed.
2.
Homework
15%
The homework assignments are exercises, not tests. Accordingly, only few points will be taken off if honest (independent) effort yielded incorrect results. However, substantial Statistics in Language Studies: Syllabus" 1/3 points will be taken off if the homework assignment is incomplete or carelessly done. Also, because the exercises will be discussed in class on the day they are due, late homework CANNOT be accepted.
3.
Quizzes
10%
Weekly quizzes will be brief, about 5–10 min. These will mainly draw on the previous weekʼs material. Since quizzes are held in the beginning of the class, please be prompt. There will be NO makeup quizzes.
4.
Midterms
20%
There will be two midterms and one final exam. The midterms are not cumulative but the final is. Makeup exams will not be given except in the case of dire, documented medical emergencies.
5.
Final
15%
There will be two midterms and one final exam. The midterms are not cumulative but the final is. Makeup exams will not be given except in the case of dire, documented medical emergencies.
6.
Practicum
10%
The practicum serves three purposes. The first is to help you apply the phonetic principles you learn from lectures to improving your pronunciation and listening comprehension skills in English. We will have ample practices in the form of pronunciation drills and dictations. The second is to serve as a recitation period and help you on questions that you might have regarding homework assignments and quizzes. The third is to provide you with the technical support that you will need in order to complete assignments and the group project along the way.
7.
Journal
10%
Pronunciation journal: Each student will keep a bi-weekly pronunciation journal to record problem areas of pronunciation in English. You are also encouraged to include anything you find interesting regarding non-English speech samples that you observed in yourself or other people in your daily life. This will help you become aware of which areas you need to work on in your own pronunciation.
8.
Project
15%
Group project: Groups will be determined during the second week of class. The project works like a minifieldwork. The language you work with has to be a language that you do not speak. Your group has to find an appropriate informant (i.e., a native speaker of the language) to assist you. The project reports should be as SHORT as you can make and still get in all the information you want to report. Please see https://ceiba.ntu.edu.tw/course/e4b29f/course_project.pdf for details. All members of a group receive the same grades.
